Ahumada Jr. grabs top-10 finish in Wild West Shootout finale

After snow claimed the mid-week portion of the Wild West Shootout at Vado (New Mexico) Speedway Park, the two-car Hacienda Motorsports team returned to the track on Friday to kick off three days of racing in the Modified division. They turned in strong performance at the 3/8-mile oval, culminating with a top-10 result.

On Friday, both Carlos Ahumada Sr. and his son, Carlos Jr., emerged from 47 entries to appear in the $1,000-to-win A-Main. Ahumada Sr. took the runner-up spot in his heat race aboard his No. 54 Modified, while Ahumada Jr. came up short in his heat. However, he nabbed the fourth and final transfer spot in his B-Main to secure a spot for his No. 65x in the 20-lap main event. Ahumada Jr. drove from starting 23rd to finish 14th in the feature, while Ahumada Sr. fell from fourth to come home 17th.

On Saturday, 44 Modifieds were at Vado, where a $2,000 winners’ share was on offer. Ahumada Sr. took the checkers in his heat race, positioning him third to start the 25-lap A-Main. He ultimately finished 21st. Ahumada Jr. was unable to make the feature event, turning in finishes of sixth in his heat and 12th in his consolation race.

Sunday saw Ahumada Jr. turn in the team’s strongest performance of the weekend with 38 Modifieds at the track. He drove from eighth to third in his heat and began the 25-lap, $3,000-to-win finale from the pole. He led two laps early and finished with a 10th-place result. Ahumada Sr. missed out on a transfer spot in his heat race and took eighth in his B-Main to end his Wild West Shootout.
