Hacienda Motorsports opens season at Vado

The father-son duo of Carlos Ahumada Sr. and Jr. took to Vado (New Mexico) Speedway Park on the first weekend in January for the opening days of the 19th annual Rio Grande Waste Services Wild West Shootout. Carlos Ahumada Jr. grabbed one top-five result, while his father turned in a pair of solid outings in his first races in nearly two years.

On Saturday, 52 Modified drivers descended on the 3/8-mile Vado track seeking the $2,000 winner’s share. Ahumada Jr. steered his Hacienda Mechanical, Inc. No. 65x machine to sixth in his heat race. He was then slated to start on the pole in his B-Main. However, he was unable to make the start and his evening ended before the 25-lap feature. He was scored with an 18th-place result.

Meanwhile, Ahumada Sr. finished 10th in his heat race aboard his No. 54 Modified. He came home 15th in the same B-Main as his son, meaning he also was unable to transfer to the main event.

In Sunday’s 50-car Modified program, Ahumada Jr. was strong throughout the day. He finished as runner-up in his heat and charged from 14th on the grid to finish fifth in the 25-lap main event. Jake Gallardo took the checkered flag in the $2,000-to-win race, followed by Dustin Sorensen, Kyle Strickler, Terry Phillips and Ahumada Jr.

Ahumada Sr. took ninth in his heat on Sunday and finished 10th in his B-Main to conclude his run.
